I called Dad and gave him the core of what you had to say about the watch and all he really said was "guess it was worth the $35 I paid". Poor Dad spent an hour typing out that message and was a nervous wreck afterwards. Pops is not a computer person (don't have one, don't want one and don't see a need for one) so I think, from what I read from you folks, I had better pick this up and do the communication. I'm the daughter that GFrance (Gary France) referred to in the post about the Hamilton watch. Doug must be psychic, we were answering this at the same time. Microfilms of these ledgers are available on loan by mail, to NAWCC members.Īs I mentioned above, the grade 947 is a highly sought after and very collectable watch. The NAWCC Library has the Hamilton production ledgers, number 10 of which will show the exact finish and sold date of your watch. Your watch is specifically listed as being one of those 163. Townsend," Roy Ehrhardt, Heart of America Press, Kansas City, MO, 2000 (Still in print - see Heart of America Press), 163 watches from this run were made as the 23-jewel grade 947.

WATCH THE LAST WITCH HUNTER IN CHATTANOOGA TN SERIAL NUMBER
Serial number 163945 came from a run of watches, 163001-164000 originally planned to be grade 943, high-grade, hunting-case, 21-jewel watches, finished over a very long time-frame of from 1903 to 1917. You don't just have a good watch, you've got one of the most highly collectable Hamiltons built. Verrrry interesting! Comments anyone? How about you, Kent?Ĭ'on gfrance, you gotta be pullin' our leg: All they'da had to do would be to replace the 943 barrel bridge with a jewelled one, and engrave it 947! (Where would the 23rd jewel have been put?) That might explain why the serial number list shows it as a 943. Is there a possibility that Hamilton up-jewelled some 943s to made 947s? As gfrance states, the 947 is engraved on the barrel bridge, not the train wheel bridge. A quick check of the Hamilton serial number list shows ONE (or could it be TWO) made, from S# 999999 to 1000000! Townsend lists the 947, but gives no serial numbers for them. In checking out this watch, I found the Col. That serial number belongs to a Hamilton grade 943 with 21 jewels of which there were about 2,400 made. You have given the serial number as being 163945. If you have given this information correctly, then your watch is an 18-size, hunter style, 23 jewel, grade 947, adjusted to 5 positions, lever, set, double roller, safety pinion, of which the record shows only 308 made between 19. That would be consistent with the 23-jewel marking on the plate. You say the movement is marked with the number 947. You might just have a very rare watch on your hands! Before we can be certain, there is an inconsistency or two to sort out. Can anyone tell me when it was made? What about the quality of the watch? I assume since it is 23 jewels it is probably a pretty good watch. In the corner of this plate it says 23 Jewels. below the jewel are the words Double Roller, Adjusted 5 Positions, and Lancaster, Pa. on this plate is the number 947 at the top, below that is Hamilton Watch Co in an arch, below that is the jewel and on one side of the jewel is the word Motor and on the other side is the word Barrel. There is a plate that covers about a fourth of the large plate with a jewel in the middle of it. Along the edge of the works is the number 163945, and the word Adjusted, around the center jewel is the words safety pinion. It is a Hamilton, the back of the works completly covers the gears and only the balance wheel is visable. After reading some of the other questions I will try to give all the information on the watch. This thing is the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. I am not what you would call a collector but I have been fasinated by pocket watches ever since I was given my Grandfathers when I turned 30 and every one and a while will stop at a farm in the area that is haveing a sale and if there is a pocket watch there and they don't want too much for it, I will buy it.
My daughter found this place and thought I might be able to find out about it. I am looking for some information on a pocket watch that I bought at a yard sale a while back.
